Music Therapy at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital

*If you are interested in volunteering at these programs, you must first register with DMUM. If you are unsure who to register as, please see our Get Involved page.*

Sophie’s Place music therapy implements musical interventions to help the Little Victors positively cope with their hospital experience, from positively coping through songwriting and recording music during chemotherapy to offering emotionally regulating musical experiences and responding to the patient in the moment with personalized care to decrease anxiety and delirium within the pediatric intensive care unit. A music therapist will monitor vitals during sessions for patients who cannot verbally express what they are feeling, and look for physiological signs of positive change via decrease in heart rate or increase in oxygen saturation levels.

Music Therapy is a subprogram of Child & Family Life at C.S. Mott Children's Hospital. Sophie's Place is a one-of-a-kind inpatient music studio in C.S. Mott that facilitates a large part of the Music Therapy program and includes a state-of-the-art recording studio, music and technology advancements, and a variety of instruments for clinical use. C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital patients and families can participate in *themed* Musical BINGO either in-person at Sophie’s Place or virtually from their rooms. Patients are awarded a prize after receiving a BINGO! So, your job will include either hosting the show alongside a music therapist, answering phones/QR code messages, and passing out prizes.

Story Time is another music therapy opportunity hosted by Sophie’s Place. Music therapists, education specialists, and child life assistants provide themed programs utilizing music, books, themes, and educational activities geared towards children ages 2-7. C.S. Mott Children’s Hospital patients and families have the opportunity to participate in-person at Sophie’s Place or virtually in their rooms. As a volunteer, your role would be to read stories, play music, distribute packets, or support patients and families who participate.
