Art Therapy

*If you are interested in volunteering at these programs, you must first register with DMUM. If you are unsure who to register as, please see our Get Involved page.*

Art therapy is used with many age groups and populations and is a particularly effective treatment modality for children and families seeking additional mental health support alongside their other therapies. Treatment protocols are designed to reinforce the other disciplines' treatment goals while improving life participation, and social-emotional well-being in children with medical, emotional, and physical challenges. Creating art allows children the opportunity to express themselves using visual arts rather than just words alone. This is developmentally appropriate for many children and teens who are learning to communicate and express themselves, as well as with patients who may not use spoken language to communicate.

Below are two programs run by our beloved Art Therapist, Rachel Werthmann (MA, LLC, ATR-P). Learn more about Rachel in our Therapist Spotlight tab!
